DETROIT SWINDLE (HEIST)
Detroit Swindle was formed in 2011 by Lars Dales (1981) and Maarten Smeets (1982). It all started after Lars – who was programming a few nightclubs in Amsterdam – had to fire Maarten for playing too much underground music. They started talking and found out they had a mutual love for Motown, hip-hop and early house music. Not long after, they started making music together and the rest as they say, is history.
When trying to define their ‘success’, it’s hard to pin it down to just one thing. Perhaps it’s their talent to find that typical groove that has been so widely acclaimed. Or maybe it’s their ability to connect musical styles spanning over more than 5 decades (and continents) into their sets and productions in such a way that you’re always curious to hear what comes next. Or could it be because they’re always on the move, searching for that new thing to challenge themselves in their productions and live sets. Whatever it is, it’s keeping them rather busy.
ALEX FROM TOKYO (Tokyo Black Star, world famous, Innervisions)
Paris born, Tokyo raised NYC based international eclectic french DJ, producer, sound designer and international co-ordinator. Having lived in Tokyo more than 20 years since he was a kid, Alex developed into one of the strongest crossover DJ’s in Tokyo in the 90s and also became a key person connecting the world and Japan.
Based now in New York since 2005, Alex has been playing regularly in NYC and all around the world. Alex still travels regularly to Japan every 3 months to play at his 17th year residency the Sunday afternoon party “Gallery” with Dj Nori, Kenji Hasegawa and Fukuba. Alex has been active producing music under the name Tokyo Black Star with his partner Isao Kumano, releasing original material on the Berlin based label Innervisions and remixing artists like Carl Craig, Phenomenal Handclap Band and Bing Ji Ling.
In Spring 2010 in Japan with Isao Kumano a new “revolutionary” audio brand called phonon (www.phonon-inc.com) representating the brand outside Japan. To keep things exciting, Alex re-launched from NYC his own label “world famous” in November 2015 with a new Tokyo Black Star “Edo Express EP” as the first release. The second release “Bing Ji Ling & Alex from Tokyo present” will be out on March 21st, 2016.
DUANE HARRIOT
Duane Harriott has been at the forefront of the NYC underground music scene for over 18 years as A DJ, Record Store Clerk, Producer and event planner. A true veteran of the DJ game, his soulful, eclectic disco-inspired sets encompass everything from northern soul, high-tech 21st century soul, 90’s deep house and exclusive disco-edits.
He was a founding resident DJ of the legendary NYC Negroclash parties, the host of the Duane TrAIN Radio WFMU and is currently of Devin Dare. Devin Dare has been releasing raw disco-jackin edits on the acclaimed Chicago-based stilov4music, Apron Records and Misteriolabel. These acclaimed productions have been finding homes in the crates of DJ’s all over the world, including Peanut Butter Wolf, Funkineven, Kyle Hall, Theo Parrish and Danny Krivit.
LOVE TEMPO WITH JUSTIN STRAUSS & BILLY CALDWELL
Good Room residents Love Tempo are back in the Bad Room for a night of Balearic, house, acid, cosmic, new wave, disco and whatever else they pull out of their record bags. The night will be helmed by to legends of the scene, Justin Strauss and Billy Caldwell.
Few DJs could adequately represent the last three decades of New York nightclub history – no less do so with such iconic credentials as Justin Strauss. Starting as DJ at New York’s legendary Mudd Club, he spun his way through The Ritz, Limelight, Area, Tunnel, M.K., Life, Centro Fly and more, pioneering his own distinctive sound, and becoming one of the most sought-after remixers and producers not just in New York, but in the world. Billy Caldwell made his name at Manchester U.Ks legendary HOME , Hacienda & Paradise Factory Clubs’ as well as co founding and DJing at the Infamous ‘Epping Walk After Hours’ Party in his native Manchester England.
