This January, the people of the country/continent of Australia are celebrating Australia Day. This day may sound exotic to us here in NYC but aside from celebrating Australian national pride, it’s notable for something that we can all get behind: this is when Australians vote for their favorite songs of the year in the Triple J Hottest 100 list (which, fun fact: was won multiple times in a row by Love Will Tear Us Apart immediately after its inception), much like Americans do in their many Facebook notes and blog entries throughout December.
We had planned our January edition of Feeling Gloomy to coincide with all this, but due to our impromptu celebration of all things Bowie, we’ve moved our observance of Australia Day back one month to February. Close enough for horseshoes. So here’s what we’re going to do:
1. celebrate the lovely music of Australia, which often gets short shrift among English-speaking nations despite producing a prodigious amount of excellent bands, many with funny haircuts.
2. Celebrate our favoritest your and our favoritest songs from 2015, since nearly nothing has come out in 2016 anyway and we are LOST.
To that end:
WE WILL HAVE A BOOMERANG THROWING CONTEST
We are slaves to stereotype, and those little thingies are hilarious. We’re going to supply the boomerang, which audience members will hurl at a target which will either be Paul Hogan or a koala or a kangaroo, we haven’t decided yet.
YOU WILL VOTE ON THE TRIPLE GLOOM 100 FOR 2015
We’ll give you post-it notes and we’ll let you vote on what songs you liked from last year, then we will cobble together the votes and play anything that isn’t wildly inappropriate, and maybe some of the things that are wildly inappopriate. No Rules, right?

+ DJs Gordon and Nathaniel Gloom will be spinning heaps of regular and irregular gloomy jams from Australia by the likes of the Church, Tame Impala, INXS, Cut Copy, Empire of the Sun, maybe even a little Kylie Minogue. We’ll also be playing your and our favorite songs from 2015, plus all your anglophilic faves that you’ll hear every month at Feeling Gloomy.
