SESSION VICTIM
The late James Brown aside, you won’t find anyone with a more visceral connection with soul than Session Victim in the midst of a DJ set. Their live set pitches the energy levels up even further, the frenzied head banging of two friends jamming like their lives depend on it, now a signature scene.
Since the success of their bedroom-produced debut LP took them a little by surprise in 2012, Hauke Freer and Matthias Reiling have formalised their ad hoc studio jams and fanatical sampling sessions into something resembling a schedule, but besides that, refreshingly nothing much has changed about the friendship spanning two decades and a regular Hamburg to Berlin studio exchange.
OCTO OCTA
It shouldn’t be surprising that Brooklyn-based producer Octo Octa (née Maya Bouldry-Morrison) had already logged tireless years as a fringe IDM artist and sound designer before her debut EP Let Me See You lasso’d a mighty wave of international house-heads to the dance-floor and helped push underground house label 100% Silk onto everyone’s radar in 2011.
Seven records later, which include a misty deep-house slow-burner in the Where Did You Go/Through The Haze 12″ for Chicago-based, Smartbar DJ Steve Mizek’s Argot imprint and the soaringly luxurious More Times EP for German powerhouse Running Back, Bouldry-Morrison’s finely-tuned marriage of exquisite compositional flare, meticulously-sculpted sonics, and primal dance-floor functionality has earned her a a Red Bull Music Academy residency in Manhattan and coveted gigs at Berlin’s Panorama Bar, Frankfurt’s Live At Robert Johnson, and Barcelona’s Sonar Festival.
HONEY SOUNDSYSTEM
Honey Soundsystem is a collective of disc jockeys, musicians, performers and designers. Co-founders Ken Woodard and Jacob Sperber formed in January 2006, after seeing severe gaps in San Francisco nightlife. They were inspired by pivotal gay underground parties, who offered a take on dance music in direct opposition to what was blaring on mainstream club speakers. Gradually they brought in other DJs with similar tastes before the group finalized its current roster: Jacob Sperber, Jason Kendig, Robert Yang and Josh Cheon. The group bond over a shared love of timeless sounds, iconic imagery, the complete look, indulgent behavior, and most of all, attractive men.
