The lull of events after New Year’s is starting to come to a close and the next few weeks are jam-packed with dance parties of every variety. We’ve got some of our own, too, although take note we had to change the date of Head On to January 30th.
The YDH2S blog is going full swing, with best-of lists, disco edits, and a DJ mix. From here on you’ll see a list of new articles from the blog in the newsletter, down below the events, so keep scrolling.
Lastly, our own Brett Burton is looking to book some bands for his cold wave / dark disco / synth night No Tears. If you’re in or know of a band who plays live and are a bit dark, dance-y, or experimental, email email@example.com. Not so much indie rock bands with a keyboard, more synthpop bands, live electronic synths & drum machines, etc.
(This newsletter will be published as a fancy email as well as on our website. The site is be updated as things progress, so it’s always the most current. You can subscribe to the newsletter, follow us on Twitter, or read this newsletter on the website, eschewing the mere idea of subscriptions. Faugh!).

It’s that special time of year when one of the DJs from the mothership, Feeling Gloomy London, graces our little colony in the new world with their presence. In honor of our guest DJ, we here at Feeling Gloomy NYC decided to throw a London-themed party and a Clash-themed party in one.
So come and help some sad anglophiles celebrate both their love of one of the world’s most magic cities and most inspiring punk bands. We’ll have lots of things emblazoned with Union Jack on offer (including cake, probably someone’s y-fronts) and lots of songs about London and by the Clash, and their pals.
Sorry Manchester, your turn will come someday.

Two years ago we started Head On with the idea of pitting two themes against one another and letting the audience pick a winner, and it’s been an amazing ride. Last year for our anniversary we decided to rematch a fan favorite, and you picked indie rock vs britpop, which panned out about like it did the first time (britpop won) but we had a blast doing it. This time we put it to another vote, and fans picked one of our most popular themes for a rematch: Motown vs. Studio 54.
Something about disco against soul feels so appealing. They’re not so different, really, lots of disco was just the logical next step after soul music. Both have lots of strings, soulful vocals, handclaps, and were made for dancing. Last time disco narrowly edged out soul in a close decision, and this time we’ll see if that doesn’t change. We can match Diana Ross and the Supremes up against Diana Ross solo, James Brown against Giorgio Moroder, the Temptations against Chic. No matter which side triumphs, we’ll all win.
10pm we’ll hang out in the front room and warm up with some good tunes
12am dancing starts in the back room
The contest begins at 1am
