It’s that time again, we’re awash in dance parties now that the new year has begun in earnest. The YDH2S DJs are all busy with their own events, and we’re tracking tons of other parties as well so let’s dive in…

HEAD ON 2nd ANNIVERSARY REMATCH: MOTOWN vs. STUDIO 54
Two years ago we started Head On with the idea of pitting two themes against one another and letting the audience pick a winner, and it’s been an amazing ride. Last year for our anniversary we decided to rematch a fan favorite, and you picked indie rock vs britpop, which panned out about like it did the first time (britpop won) but we had a blast doing it. This time we put it to another vote, and fans picked one of our most popular themes for a rematch: Motown vs. Studio 54.
Something about disco against soul feels so appealing. They’re not so different, really, lots of disco was just the logical next step after soul music. Both have lots of strings, soulful vocals, handclaps, and were made for dancing. Last time disco narrowly edged out soul in a close decision, and this time we’ll see if that doesn’t change. We can match Diana Ross and the Supremes up against Diana Ross solo, James Brown against Giorgio Moroder, the Temptations against Chic. No matter which side triumphs, we’ll all win.
10pm we’ll hang out in the front room and warm up with some good tunes
12am dancing starts in the back room
The contest begins at 1am

RELEASE the BEAST
The most anti-drum machine party ever is BACK. Why are we so against drum machines? Eh, we’re not so much, but we have to draw a line in the sand. Release the Beast is full of music by creatures of flesh and blood, no 1s and 0s were harmed in the making of these tunes.
Beyond that? DJs Brian Blackout and Doctor Mister as omnivorous as a bear emerging from hibernation (although bears are still hibernating, we think). Anything made by hairy studio beasts is fair game. What will you hear, you ask?…….

If You’re Feeling Gloomy
You might ask the Brothers Gloom: what is the party you were born to throw? The party you have been waiting with every fiber of your being to throw. Well, we are ready to answer that question. Belle & Sebastian, while they are one of our favorite bands of all time, are not exactly a dance juggernaut, but lo, suddenly they’ve re-embraced synthesizers, they love dancing, they even have an album with dancing in the title! So we decided it was a great time for us to cobble together the few dance songs B&S have already, smush them up with the great songs from their newest LP, and throw in a giant heap of our favorite indiepop to boot, and then we will throw the BEST (er, well only) BELLE & SEBASTIAN-THEMED DANCE PARTY EVER!
Were you (are you?) on the Sinister list? Did you have a cassette copy of Tigermilk? Do you remember bugging the DJ at your favorite britpop dance party to play Electronic Renaissance? Between the two of us, we’ve done all these things and far, far geekier heights of B&S fandom. Whether or not you’re a superfan or you just enjoy the odd Scottish pop song, this is the night where we’ll bust out our anoraks and Sarah Records and celebrate one of the best bands on the planet.
IF YOU’RE FEELING GLOOMY
(a depressing celebratory dance party dedicated to all things B&S)
+ Upcoming Belle & Sebastian-themed activities to come, so be sure to check back in
+ Your hosts DJs Gordon and Nathaniel Gloom playing every Belle & Sebastian song you could ever conceive of dancing to, plus loads of their influences, contemporaries, and general danceable indiepop. But, you know, the gloomy kind. And we promise, no Arab Strap
